Steve Jobs, you will be missed

"You've got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don't settle." - Steve Jobs

I was lucky enough to see Steve Jobs speak live at Stanford's commencement a few years ago and it was definitely the best graduation speech I've ever seen.  I love his comparison of the search for a job to the search for love.

Shop My Outfit on ModCloth!

A couple of weeks ago I got an email looking for volunteers to shoot a look for ModCloth's "Shop Our Outfits"  section and I quickly signed up.  It was an awesome experience that I couldn't wait to share with you guys!  They brought a bunch of Bay Area locals into their offices for a lovely day of pampering and exploring - a total blast!  One of their stylists picked the look for me (below) based on my winter wishlist and I think she did a great job capturing my style.  Obviously, I'm not over red pants  and I also loved the coat and polka-dot chiffon top they put me in. (If I didn't already own multiple polka dot chiffon tops,  I'd have taken it home with me haha) I love how ModCloth always has  "real" girls model their clothes and I was honored to be a part of it.  Now,  if only I could get a professional photographer to capture my outfits more often...

Check out the pieces from the look here.

Colorful Suits for Spring 2012

I've got suits on the brain.  And, once I decided I was looking for the perfectly unique suit,  I started noticing them everywhere!  There was an especially colorful selection on the spring 2012 runways, including lots of neon and pink.

Style Inspiration: The Wonder Years

Amazon announced today that a ton of older movies and TV shows will be available streaming video, including: THE WONDER YEARS!  I adored "The Wonder Years" growing up (and wanted to be Winnie Cooper?)  so,  I can't wait to re-visit the family drama.  In the mean time, with 60s/70s  influence all over the fashion world this fall, I think "The Wonder Years" is a great source of style-inspiration.   It's amazing that almost 20 years later, I still want Winnie's stick straight long brown hair. The skinny little headbands that she wore are the perfect, almost cutesy, accessory to add to a more grown up modern look.  How happy does this picture of Kevin and Winnie make you?

Layers of sweaters and button-down blouses are always a fall staple of mine.  This season, I've been sticking with super-classic preppy versions, a-la-Winnie.

Of course I'm also loving looking back at Karen Arnold's breezy hippie style (I vaguely remember that she went to berkeley?)

I'm digging the collegiate vibe of Winnie's outfits later in the series.  These would be my modern picks:The Wonder Years: 70's Fall Fashion inspiration

Gingham for the Home

Sticking with the preppy vibe that i started out with this week,  I want to focus on on a classic pattern that has been everywhere recently.  I love GINGHAM and right now, it seems like everybody owns at least one gingham shirt.  But,  have you thought about using it in your home decor? It might sound a bit scary... many of us think red picnic table cloths or super kitschy cottage looks, however, if used right, gingham can be a totally funand modernlayer of pattern in a home.  Here are some fun examples I've seen recently on the interwebs:

I love how this punchy striped chair and old ship painting funk up this traditional feeling wallpaper.

Again, this wallpaper looks classic, but the colors and other items in the room make it feel modern. Gingham kitchen ceiling from Apartment Therapy (I've said before, I think the decorative impact ceilings can have is under appreciated)Or, you could look down and update your floors.

Another gingham wallpaper, I love the bright and airy feeling of this dining room.

Herve Pierre went extreme with gingham in his bedroom (photographed by Todd Selby)

Check out this settee - it can totally be a neutral, too.

This little upholstered chair from Canadian House & Home is too cute not to include.

Gingham can be found in just about every color of the rainbow and the size of the squares can range from a from tiny and neutral to large and graphic squares, making it extremely versatile. So,  why not give it a try in your  next project?
