DiY Inspiration: Painted Espadrilles

Growing up, I definitely had a pair of converse and  a pair of Vans that I decorated myself with some super fancy doodles(Along with white out decorated backpack -- did anyone else do that?!)    ..... Anyways... I would have been totally OK  to leave drawing on my shoes as a thing of the past, but I recently saw these darling customized espadrilles on J.Crew's blog, and now I'm heavily considering delving back into the art of shoe-doodling.

My favorite are the stripes and the anchor pair (big suprise!)

You can pick up your own Soludos here for just $28.  I think it might be fun to start with the yellow and add either stripes or my own ditsy anchor design.

More DIY Inspiration: Dipped Furniture Legs

Last week I shared overlays as an awesome way to customize your furniture, and this week I wanted to share some inspiration for another furniture painting trend: dipped legs.  I've been seeing tables and chairs with colorblocked legs popping up everywhere and I think it's a really fun way to add a little color to a room!

I love this blue and white corner!

Gold legs are a great way add just a bit of glamour

Instead of dipping the legs,  this console table was reverse painted, leaving just the end of the legs wood tone.  Such an awesome way to add personality to an Ikea table. I love this color, too!

DiY Polka Dot Cutoffs Project

As spring rolls around, denim cutoffs tend to become a wardrobe staple.   I've got a couple colors and lengths, but this time I decided to play around with a little bleach.

Using a bleach pen and some scissors, I turned an old pair of jeans into a fun pair of polka dot cutoffs!

The process was super simple:

  • Cut off old jeans to preferred length
  • Cut cardboard or thick paper to line the shorts (so the bleach doesn't soak through)
  • Use a bleach pen (like this) to draw dots onto the shorts
  • Wait... (I let my bleach soak overnight for almost white spots, but I also did a test for about 30 minutes which works great if you want more tonal polka dots)
  • Rinse out the bleach, and wash and dry your pants as normal

Here are the end results!

Repurpose Clip-On Earrings as Shoe Clips

Adorned shoes and even shoe clips seem to be popping up everywhere recently (even Madewell) which led me to consider ways to jazz up my own shoes.  In one of my antique fair trips, I realized that the large clip on earrings that I love might actually work on my shoes.

I thought I might have to buy some shoe clip backings to make them work,  but no need.  I just used the earring clip to snap them right onto my shoes:

It's a super easy way to repurpose costume jewelry and give life to your old shoes. (Even kinda remind me of Carrie's blue Manolo Blahniks)

I threw them on with  pair of jeans last week, but I think the clip-ons would work equally as well  on a pair of black pumps with a LBD for a more formal night out.

(Wearing: Zara green suede pumps with vintage clip on earrings,  Seven jeans (super old), J.Crew silk blouse, Nordstrom boys navy blazer)

Holiday How To: Salt Dough Ornaments & Gift Tags

This winter I decided to revive a holiday project that I did as a kid:  salt dough ornaments.  Not only is this a super simple project, it uses items you already have in your kitchen (double easy). I made a bunch of these to use as gift tags, but with a hook, they will easily translate to the tree.

The recipe is simple:

Salt Dough Ornaments

  • ½ cup salt
  • 1 cup flour
  • ½ cup water

1.  Pre-heat the oven to 250

2.  Use a rolling pin to roll out the dough to ~1/4 inch thick.    Cut out shapes with cookie cutters (just like sugar cookies)  I used a glass to get simple circles.

Optional: Use a stamp to imprint a 3-d message or image onto the ornaments.

4. Use a drinking straw to poke a  hole for a ribbon or ornament hook.

 5. Place on a parchment lined baking sheet. Bake for 1.5 hours.

Optional: Paint.  I used a wash of green acrylic paint to give the gift tags I made a bit of color.  In the past I've also spray painted them and modge-podged them for a shinier affect.

Let me know if you have questions!
